Sea Turtles and Lights- Public Information Brochure

Nesting sea turtles and hatchlings can become confused by artificial lights from houses and streetlights. This can sometimes force nesting sea turtles to go to a less suitable beach to nest, and attract hatchlings so they crawl toward the light rather than the ocean and die on land when they are eaten by predators or overheat in the sun. To help people learn about the problems that can be caused by artificial lights close to nesting beaches, Sea Turtle Foundation have produced an information brochure that is available on our website here and will be distributed to all beach front communities in Queensland and New South Wales (Australia) before the 2008/09 nesting season. If you know of another area where lights are a problem to sea turtles and hatchlings, please contact us so we can distribute our lighting brochure to other communities in need of help.
