Nesting monitoring

GET INVOLVED

Sea Turtle Foundation is one of the organisations along the Queensland coast that every year monitor sea turtle nesting in the last seven days of November and the first seven days of December. We invite volunteers in Townsville to join us to experience this fascinating aspect of the sea turtle life cycle.

When turtles are encountered, we employ best practice guidelines to measure and record tag numbers of the turtles.

Groups are lead by an experienced turtle expert and are limited to 10 people. Turtle sightings cannot be guaranteed!

Thank you to the 108 volunteers that joined us in the 2008-09 nesting season! We had two green turtles and seven flatback turtles come up to nest at the AIMS beach in 17 days. One of the flatback turtles was tagged in 2002 and another in 2005. It is great to see ‘old’ and new turtles come up to nest.

Tracks have also been reported from AIMS (before we started nest monitoring) and other places:

AIMS beach: 20
The Strand (Townsville): 5 tracks (2 nests)
Pallarenda: 4 nests
Magnetic Island: 5 tracks
Bowen: 2 tracks

Thank you to all that have informed us of tracks and turtles until now. Please keep emailing to: tracks@seaturtlefoundation.org or SMS: 0431 259 129
