Nest attacks by feral animals are a serious problem in Australia. Pigs, foxes and dogs dig up nests to eat turtle eggs. On some northern Australian beaches there is 100% mortality of eggs due to predation by feral animals.
These animals are introduced to Australia by humans, either directly to turtle nesting areas or by moving into the area as their population grows in size. Feral animals impact in many ways on native animals by competing for food and habitat and by altering habitats.
In places introduced plants (weeds) are invading beaches and reducing availability of nesting sites by either changing sand composition or blocking access.
